The only thing that is needed is a clear sight line to the target and a steady hand, especially for longer distances. Maps of golf courses will not have to be downloaded, and satellite strength signals aren't an issue.

2. GPS units are quite a bit more complex. The simplest devices are about giving you yardage, sometimes to the front, middle, and back of the green. Some will also measure distances to hazards. But if you golf multiple courses, you will have to download a map of each course, so you will need to know the capacity your particular device can store. Therefore, the quality of the GPS map will determine its usability. You will have to know if the courses you play have maps available for your particular GPS model. Lastly, if you are unable to connect to the satellite due to cloudy conditions or tall trees, your screen may be blank. That said, I've used them with excellent results. GPS golf systems are rapidly becoming a staple for many courses as part of their course management. They can be used to monitor where golfers are located, and as part of a system to communicate with golfers regarding weather conditions (or to just tell them to speed it up).

Golf distance measuring devices are really cool tools for the golfer, and not just as toys. They enhance the golfing experience, and provide one less excuse for hitting long or short. It won't be long when they will be as standard to the golfer as a sand wedge.
