Is a Golf Laser Rangefinder Right for You?
While just about any golfer can benefit from a golf rangefinder, not everyone is suited for a golf laser rangefinder. When you're talking about an investment of 0 - 0, you probably want to make sure you've thought it through. Here are four questions to consider before taking the plunge:
Do you have reasonably steady hands? Although improved technology continues to make laser golf rangefinders easier to use, you still need to be able to hold it fairly steady and keep the target centered in its sight. If you are one of those people who always take blurry pictures, you probably will be better off using a GPS golf rangefinder. Will it fit into your style of play? If you're the type of golfer who does math to figure out yardage, a golf laser rangefinder may be right up your alley. No more pacing or guesstimating how far you are from a yardage marker. No more searching for marked sprinkler heads. Simply go to your ball, laser the target and make any necessary adjustments for pin placement. You'll have more accurate information than ever before and it takes you less time to get it. On the other hand, if you're a super speedy golfer, who usually just glances at a yardage marker from across the fairway and grabs a club, a laser rangefinder may not fit into your routine very easily. Taking the time to pick up your laser rangefinder, point and shoot it toward the target and possibly even factor the pin placement, may drive you crazy. GPS golf rangefinders serve these players well, as a quick glance will give yardage the middle of the green. What's your skill level? Quite honestly most golfers would do well to always aim for the middle of the green. Unless you're a low handicap player or great manager of your golf game, yardage to the middle of the green is what you should be using almost all of the time. A golf laser rangefinder cannot give you this information unless the pin is in the middle of the green. You may be able to estimate where the middle is based upon a pin placement card, which can be very useful. If you know the pin is 130 yards and on the front of the green, you may decide to hit the club that will land you between 130-140 yards and leave you with a putt. If you don't see yourself making the calculation, having only yardage to the pin that a laser rangefinder provides, might actually be detrimental to your game. Do you compete in golf tournaments that allow golf rangefinders? Laser rangefinders are accurate all the time to within about a yard and they're very consistent and reliable. Most competitive golfers will benefit from a laser rangefinder. Generally tournaments provide a pin placement sheet to every player and it usually includes green depth. Tournament caliber golfers will gain an advantage from this greater accuracy if they know how to manage their golf games. This also eliminates the mishaps of GPS rangefinders such as showing up with the wrong course downloaded or having trees block your satellite. A golf laser rangefinder is a good long-term investment for any competitive golfer. No annual fees and very durable.
In summary, we recommend a golf laser rangefinder for low-handicap and competitive golfers or golfers who have a solid understanding of how to manage their golf games. It does require somewhat steady hands and a little bit of patience. The benefits over GPS are: ready to go out of the box; no computer downloads, the level of accuracy and they work on any golf course. Do keep in mind that a laser only works if you can see the target. On golf courses with blind approach shots, you may not be able to get yardage to your target.
